Optimization score

Definition in short: A percentage Google estimates from your settings and recommendations, not a performance metric.

What is the optimization score?

The optimization score is a percentage that Google Ads shows and that Google estimates from your settings and the available recommendations. It is not a performance metric: a high score says nothing about your revenue or return. Some recommendations lead to more budget or broader targeting, so judge them yourself.

Why is the optimization score important?

  • Starting points: the recommendations point to missing or outdated settings.
  • Stay critical: a recommendation does not always serve your goal.
  • Not a KPI: your profit and cost per conversion say more than the percentage.

Examples of the optimization score

  • Google recommends raising your daily budget while your margin does not allow it: you consciously decide not to.
  • Google recommends adding missing sitelinks: that is often a useful, cheap improvement.
  • An account with a score of 100 percent can still convert poorly.

How do you handle the optimization score?

Read the recommendations critically and apply only what fits your goal and budget. Dismiss the rest. Do not let recommendations apply automatically without checking. An agency that manages Google Ads reviews each one for its effect.
