What is retargeting?
Retargeting is showing ads again to people who have come into contact with your website, app or ads before. In practice the term is often used to mean the same as remarketing, sometimes more specifically for ads based on a cookie or pixel. There is no sharp line between the two terms.
Why is retargeting important?
- A second chance: visitors who do not buy right away get a reminder.
- Efficient budget: you focus on people who have shown real interest.
- Across several channels: it works not only in Google, but also on Meta and LinkedIn, for example.
Examples of retargeting
- A visitor looks at running shoes and later sees an ad for the same shoes on a news site.
- A visitor to a product page later sees an ad on Instagram.
- A B2B company shows visitors to its free trial page an ad on LinkedIn.
How do you use retargeting?
Place the channel’s tag or pixel on your website, create lists per visitor group and link ads to those lists. Ask for consent through your cookie banner and limit how long people stay on a list. Read more about the setup under Google Ads campaigns.
