Redirect loop

Definition in short: Redirects that keep sending each other on forever, so the page never loads.

What is a redirect loop?

A redirect loop is a situation in which redirects keep sending each other on endlessly, for example from URL A to B and from B back to A. As a result, the page never loads. After several attempts the browser stops and shows an error such as ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS.

Why is a redirect loop a problem?

  • Page unreachable: visitors only see an error message.
  • Cannot be indexed: search engines cannot fetch and include the page.
  • Lost customers: a working page is a precondition for every conversion.

Examples of a redirect loop

  • A rule that forwards http to https and a plugin that sends visitors back to http
  • Two rules for with and without www that work against each other
  • A page that redirects to itself

How do you deal with a redirect loop?

Check the settings of your server, CMS and plugins and remove the rule that causes the loop. Then test the URLs again in a browser. During a migration, have it checked through technical SEO.
