What is a URL?
A URL (Uniform Resource Locator) is the unique web address of a page, image or other file on the internet. It consists of a protocol (https), a domain name and a path. Search engines use the URL to find pages, tell them apart and store them.
Why is a URL important?
- Clarity: a short, readable URL shows visitors where they will land.
- One page, one address: search engines treat every unique URL as a separate page.
- Stability: a changed URL without a redirect costs you visitors and visibility.
Examples of a URL
https://www.example.com/blog/seo-tips- Protocol: https, domain: example.com, path: /blog/seo-tips
- Hard to read:
https://www.example.com/?p=4821
How do you create a good URL?
Use short URLs with your main keyword, lowercase letters and hyphens between words, and do not change them after publishing without a redirect. Leave out filler words, capital letters and long strings of numbers (on-page SEO).
