What is a slug?
A slug is the part of a URL that identifies one specific page, directly after the domain or the folder. In example.com/blog/seo-audit, “seo-audit” is the slug. A good slug is short, descriptive and made of lowercase letters with hyphens between the words.
Why is a slug important?
- Clear to visitors: a readable slug shows what the page is about.
- Relevance signal: the main keyword in the slug confirms the topic of the page.
- Stable: a slug that doesn’t change prevents broken links and lost traffic.

How do you choose a slug?
Choose the slug when you create the page, use the main keyword and leave out stop words and dates. If you change a slug later, set up a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one and update your internal links. See on-page SEO.
