Ad auction

Definition in short: The process Google uses to decide which ads show for a search, and in what order.

What is an ad auction?

An ad auction is the process Google uses to decide which ads show for a search and in what order. Every search can start an auction. Google looks at your bid, the quality of your ad and landing page, and the context of the searcher, among other things. You usually do not pay your maximum bid, but what is needed to keep your position.

Why is the ad auction important?

  • Budget is not everything: quality counts, so a higher bid is not always enough.
  • Insight into costs: you understand why one click costs more than another.
  • Context counts: device, location and time can change the outcome of each auction.

Examples of an ad auction

  • Two advertisers both bid €1.50, but the one with the more relevant ad can rank higher.
  • Your maximum bid is €2.00, but you pay €1.40 because that was enough to keep your position.
  • The same search on a phone in the evening can have a different outcome than on a computer by day.

How do you work with the ad auction?

You do not change the auction directly, but you steer the factors that count: a suitable bid strategy, relevant ads and landing pages, and good conversion data. Read more in Google Ads campaigns.
