What is geotargeting?
Geotargeting is targeting your ads to a geographic area. In Google Ads you choose countries, regions, cities or a radius around a location, and you can also exclude areas. Google’s default setting is “presence or interest”, where people who show interest in a location can also see your ad.
Why is geotargeting important?
- Local relevance: only people in or near your service area see your ad.
- Less waste: you do not pay for clicks from people you cannot serve.
- Targeted message: you write a separate text or bid per region.
Examples of geotargeting
- An installer from Veenendaal targets a radius around its service area.
- A store that only ships to the Netherlands and Belgium selects those two countries.
- A B2B software company excludes areas where it has no customers.
How do you use geotargeting?
Choose your target area based on where you actually deliver or work, and decide whether “presence or interest” fits or whether you choose “presence” only. Check in the location report where clicks come from and exclude where needed. See also our Google Ads campaigns.
