What is click depth?
Click depth is the number of clicks needed to reach a particular page from the homepage. A page that you can reach with one click from the homepage has a click depth of 1. The lower the click depth, the faster visitors and search engines usually find the page.
Why is click depth important?
- Found faster: pages close to the homepage are usually crawled more often.
- More value: pages close to the homepage usually receive more internal link value.
- Usability: visitors find what they need without clicking for long.
Examples of click depth
- Home, Services, SEO: the SEO page has a click depth of 2.
- An old blog post that can only be reached through four overview pages has a click depth of 5.
How do you limit click depth?
As a rule of thumb, keep important pages within three to four clicks of the homepage. Use a clear menu, category pages and links from popular pages. A crawl with an SEO tool shows which pages sit too deep (technical SEO).
