What is JSON-LD?
JSON-LD (JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data) is a way of adding structured data to a web page using a block of JSON code. Search engines read it to learn what the page contains, such as a business, a product or an article. Google recommends JSON-LD as the format for schema markup.
Why is JSON-LD important?
- Recommended by Google: it is the format Google prefers for structured data.
- Easy to maintain: the code sits apart from the visible text, in a single block.
- Rich results: good markup can help you earn enhanced search results, though that is never guaranteed.
Examples of JSON-LD
- A
Productblock with name, price and ratings on a product page. - An
Articleblock with title, author and publication date on a blog post. - A
LocalBusinessblock with the address and opening hours of a contractor.
How do you use JSON-LD?
Pick the schema type that fits your page, write the details as JSON and place them in a <script type="application/ld+json"> block in the HTML. Check the result with Google’s Rich Results Test (technical SEO).
