Meta tags

Definition in short: Pieces of code in a page’s head that give search engines and browsers information about that page.

What are meta tags?

Meta tags are pieces of HTML code in the head of a web page that provide information about the page to search engines, browsers and social networks. Visitors do not see them on the page itself. Well-known examples are the title tag, the meta description, meta robots and the viewport tag.

Why are meta tags important?

  • Clear display: the title and description help decide how your page looks in search results.
  • Indexing control: meta robots decides whether a page ends up in the index.
  • Good mobile display: the viewport tag makes your page render properly on a phone.

Examples of meta tags

  • <title>Running shoes for wide feet | Example Shop</title>
  • <meta name="description" content="...">
  • <meta name="robots" content="noindex">
  • <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">

How do you use meta tags?

Give every page its own title and description, and use meta robots only on pages you want to keep out of search results. Most CMSs and SEO plugins handle this per page. See also our explanation of on-page SEO.
