What is a title tag?
A title tag is the HTML <title> element in the head of a web page and defines the title of that page. It appears in the browser tab and usually as the clickable headline of the result in Google. Google may show a different title when the title tag does not describe the page well.
Why is a title tag important?
- First impression: it is often the first thing a person reads about your page, and it influences whether they click.
- Clear topic: it tells search engines and visitors what the page is about.
- Keyword in the right place: Google uses the title to understand a page, so your main keyword belongs in it.
Examples of a title tag
<title>Plumber in Leeds | Smith & Sons Plumbing</title>- Too generic: “Home” or “Welcome”
- Better: “Loft Conversion Costs and Timeline | Jansen Builders”
How do you use a title tag?
Give every page a unique title tag with the main keyword near the start and your brand name at the end. Keep it short enough not to be cut off, often around 50 to 60 characters, and write it so that people want to click (on-page SEO).
