Impressions

Definition in short: The number of times your page appears in search results, whether or not anyone clicks on it.

What are impressions?

Impressions are the number of times a page from your website is shown in Google’s search results. An impression counts as soon as the page appears, even if nobody clicks on it. You can see impressions per query and per page in Google Search Console.

Why are impressions important?

  • Measuring visibility: impressions show how often you appear for a search.
  • Finding opportunities: many impressions but few clicks point to a title or description that can be better.
  • Tracking growth: rising impressions are often a first sign that new content is starting to rank.

Examples of impressions

  • An article that is shown 1,200 times and clicked 36 times has 1,200 impressions.
  • A new page gets 50 impressions in its first week, before it has received a single click.

How do you use impressions?

Open the performance report in Google Search Console and look at impressions, clicks and CTR per page and per query. Improve pages with many impressions and few clicks with a better title and meta description (on-page SEO).
