What is rel="ugc"?
rel="ugc" is a value of the rel attribute on a link, used to show that the link sits in content that users posted themselves. UGC stands for user-generated content, such as comments, forum posts and reviews. Google introduced the value in 2019 as a hint for search engines.
Why is rel="ugc" important?
- Control over links: you do not automatically endorse whatever others post on your site.
- Less spam: it makes spam links in comments less attractive.
- A clear hint: search engines know that you did not select the link yourself.
Examples of rel="ugc"
<a href="https://example.com" rel="ugc">example</a>- A link in a comment below a blog article
- A link in a forum post or review
How do you use rel="ugc"?
Most CMSs and forum software add the attribute to comments automatically. Check this in your system’s settings, or add rel="ugc" by hand. Read more about link building.
