What is rel="sponsored"?
rel="sponsored" is a value of the rel attribute on a link, used to show that the link is paid or sponsored. Google introduced it in 2019 alongside nofollow and ugc. It tells search engines the link comes from a commercial arrangement rather than being a voluntary recommendation.
Why is rel="sponsored" important?
- Honest labeling: Google expects paid links to be labeled as such.
- Less risk: you avoid links you pay for distorting your link profile.
- More clarity: Google gets a hint about the nature of the link.
Examples of rel="sponsored"
<a href="https://example.com" rel="sponsored">example</a>- A paid advertorial with a link to your store
- An affiliate link in an article
