What is a GCLID?
GCLID stands for Google Click ID and is a unique code that Google Ads adds to your landing page URL when auto-tagging is on. The code identifies the ad click. That lets Google Ads and analytics tools link a conversion to the right click, even if the conversion only happens later.
Why is the GCLID important?
- A link between click and conversion: the code connects a visit to the campaign, ad and keyword.
- The basis for offline conversions: with a stored GCLID you can send a sale back to Google Ads later.
- Richer reports: linked analytics tools can show ad data alongside the visit.
Examples of the GCLID
- A visitor lands on
yoursite.com/quote?gclid=...: the long code behind the parameter is the GCLID. - A form stores the GCLID in a hidden field, so the CRM can send the code back when a deal is won.
- For iOS privacy situations, Google also uses the parameters
wbraidandgbraid.
How do you use the GCLID?
Turn on auto-tagging and make sure your website or redirects do not strip the parameter. Store the GCLID with forms if you want to import offline conversions, and make sure your cookie banner and privacy statement fit this measurement. For help with the setup, see analytics and dashboards.
