Product feed

Definition in short: A file with all the product data of your store, which advertising platforms read.

What is a product feed?

A product feed is a file or connection containing all the product data of an online store in a fixed format, so that advertising platforms can show the products. For each product the feed contains, among other things, an ID, title, description, link, image, price, availability, brand and GTIN. Google Merchant Center reads the feed.

Why is a product feed important?

  • The basis of Shopping: without a feed there are no product ads.
  • Current data: price and stock come from your store, as long as the feed is refreshed regularly.
  • Quality determines reach: the data decides whether products are approved and for which searches they appear.

Examples of a product feed

  • A sporting goods store supplies a feed with thousands of products, each with an ID, title, price and image.
  • Each product has a GTIN (barcode) in the feed, so Google recognizes the product.
  • The feed is generated automatically by the store platform and refreshed daily.

How do you use a product feed?

Generate the feed from your store platform or a feed tool, have Merchant Center fetch it and set a fixed refresh schedule. Check disapprovals and missing attributes, and then improve titles and attributes with feed optimization. See e-commerce stores.
