What is INP?
INP (Interaction to Next Paint) is a Core Web Vitals metric that measures how quickly a page responds to clicks, taps and key presses. The score is the time between a visitor’s action and the moment the page visibly reacts. INP replaced the metric FID in March 2024.
Why is INP important?
- Usability: a slow response feels like a broken page and drives visitors away.
- Part of Core Web Vitals: Google measures INP as one of the three Core Web Vitals.
- Conversion: a fast cart or form lowers the chance that visitors give up.
Examples of INP
- Good: 200 milliseconds or less.
- Needs improvement: between 200 and 500 milliseconds.
- Poor: more than 500 milliseconds, for example a filter menu in a store that hangs for half a second.
How do you improve INP?
Measure your INP with the Core Web Vitals report in Google Search Console or with PageSpeed Insights. Reduce heavy JavaScript, load third-party scripts only where needed and break up long tasks so the page responds faster (technical SEO).
