What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a proposed Markdown file in the root of a website that summarizes the site’s key pages and explanations for language models. The proposal came from Jeremy Howard in 2024. It is not a confirmed standard: the major search engines and AI providers have not confirmed that they use it.
Why is llms.txt important?
- Experiment: it takes little time and may help if providers start to support it.
- Overview: you list your key pages and core message clearly, which is also useful internally.
- No silver bullet: it does not replace good content and has no proven effect on rankings or mentions.
Examples of llms.txt
- The file sits in the root folder, for example
https://example.com/llms.txt. - The file contains the site name, a short description and lists of links to important pages.
How do you use llms.txt?
Place a Markdown file at /llms.txt with a short description of your business and links to your most important pages. Treat it as an experiment. Invest first in well-structured content and GEO; llms.txt is at most a supplement.
