What is page speed?
Page speed is how quickly a web page loads and becomes usable for a visitor. It is measured with, among other things, the Core Web Vitals and tools such as Google’s PageSpeed Insights. A slow page costs you visitors, and Google uses speed as one of its signals for page experience.
Why is page speed important?
- Fewer drop-offs: visitors do not like to wait, especially on a phone.
- Higher conversion: a fast site makes ordering and getting in touch easier.
- Better user experience: speed is part of what Google counts as page experience.
Examples of page speed
- A store whose product photos are too heavy, making the page slow to load
- A site slowed down by too many third-party scripts
- A local website on good hosting that finishes loading quickly
How do you improve page speed?
Make your images smaller, use modern formats such as WebP, load scripts deferred and choose reliable hosting. Measure before and after with PageSpeed Insights. Read more under technical SEO.
