Keyword mapping

Definition in short: Assigning each main keyword to exactly one page of your website and recording it in an overview.

What is keyword mapping?

Keyword mapping is the practice of assigning one main keyword, plus a few related keywords, to one specific page of a website. The result is usually a spreadsheet that lists, per page, the keyword, its search volume and its search intent. That way you know which page should rank for which topic.

Why is keyword mapping important?

  • No internal competition: two pages no longer fight over the same keyword.
  • Clear structure: every page gets its own topic and purpose.
  • Gaps become visible: keywords without a page stand out immediately.

Examples of keyword mapping

  • The page /cleaning-company gets the main keyword “cleaning company”.
  • The page /office-cleaning gets the main keyword “office cleaning”.
  • The keyword “window cleaner” has no page yet and becomes a new page.

How do you use keyword mapping?

Put the keywords from your keyword research in a spreadsheet, group them by search intent and assign each group to one existing or new page. Note the main keyword, search volume and status per page, and update the sheet as your site grows (on-page SEO).
