What is a featured snippet?
A featured snippet is a highlighted answer at the top of Google’s search results, above the regular results. Google pulls the answer automatically from a web page and shows it as a paragraph, list or table, with a link to the source. You cannot set a featured snippet yourself, but you can improve your chances of getting one.
Why is a featured snippet important?
- A lot of attention: the answer sits prominently at the top of the page.
- Authority: your brand is shown as the source of the answer.
- Matches questions: it suits people asking a concrete question.
Examples of a featured snippet
- A paragraph for the question “what is a boiler”.
- A numbered list for “how do you change a bike tyre”.
- A table of prices or a product comparison.
How do you win a featured snippet?
Put the question in a heading on your page and give a short, clear answer of roughly 40 to 60 words directly below it. Use lists or tables for steps and comparisons. There is no guarantee that Google will pick your answer. See also on-page SEO.
