GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

Definition in short: Optimizing your content and brand so AI answers mention you or cite your pages as a source.

What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the optimization of content and brand authority so that AI search engines and chat assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews mention your brand or use your pages as a source. The term overlaps heavily with AEO, LLM SEO and AI SEO, which are often used for the same thing.

Why is GEO important?

  • New search behavior: more and more people ask their question directly to an AI assistant.
  • Few sources: an AI answer usually names only a handful of websites.
  • No guarantee: nobody can force a mention, so GEO builds on good SEO.

Examples of GEO

  • A clear, factual answer at the top of a page that can be quoted on its own.
  • Mentions of your brand on trustworthy external websites and in reviews.
  • Clear author information and structured data.
  • Original figures or research that other sources do not have.

How do you apply GEO?

Start with a strong SEO foundation: good content and a technically healthy site. Answer questions briefly and concretely, back claims with sources and make sure your brand is mentioned in more places. Read more in our GEO service.
