What is the local pack?
The local pack is the box with a map and usually three businesses that Google shows for searches with local intent, such as “hairdresser near me” or “plumber Cambridge”. The businesses come from Google Business Profile. Relevance, distance and prominence determine which businesses are shown.
Why is the local pack important?
- Prominent spot: the box often sits above the regular search results.
- High intent: people who search locally often want to call or visit quickly.
- Its own rules: a strong Google Business Profile counts heavily, even without the best website.
Examples of the local pack
- “dentist Cambridge”: a map with three practices.
- “bike repair near me”: the three nearest shops with star ratings.
- “roofer Leeds”: three businesses with phone numbers and directions.
How do you get into the local pack?
Fill in your Google Business Profile completely, choose the right category, ask customers for reviews and reply to them. Keep your NAP details consistent, build local citations and run a website with a page per service and region. A spot is never guaranteed (local SEO).
