Long-tail keywords

Definition in short: Specific search phrases of three or more words, with lower volume and less competition.

What are long-tail keywords?

Long-tail keywords are search phrases of usually three or more words that someone uses to search very specifically, such as “black running shoes for wide feet”. Each phrase is searched rarely, but together they make up a large share of all search traffic.

Why are long-tail keywords important?

  • Less competition: you rank for them faster, even with a smaller website.
  • Clear search intent: someone who searches specifically knows what they want and converts more often.
  • Fits AI search: in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, people ask long, complete questions (see GEO).

Examples of long-tail keywords

  • Broad: “running shoes”
  • Long-tail: “running shoes for wide feet”
  • Even more specific: “best running shoes for wide feet under 100 euros”

How do you use long-tail keywords?

Answer one specific question per long-tail keyword on its own page or in an article. Put the keyword in the title, the heading and the first paragraph, and link to the related service or product page (on-page SEO). Find ideas in Google’s search suggestions, in “People also ask” and in the questions your customers ask (content marketing).
